- Elbow crutch: forearm cuff (open or closed), handgrip, upper tube, lower tube, push-button or spring pin, anti-slip rubber tip (often 22 mm).
- Axillary crutch: underarm pad, bow, handgrip, push-button height tube, rubber tip.
- Tripod stick: offset handle, height tube, three-leg base, three ferrules.
- Seat stick: crook or foam handle, folding seat disc, three vinyl-tipped legs.
How to set walking stick and crutch height
- Shoes on. Arms relaxed.
- Walking stick / elbow handgrip at the wrist crease. Elbow about 30 degrees when holding the grip. Cuff 1-2 inches below the elbow bend.
- Underarm pad: two finger-widths below the armpit. Not jammed in. Wrong height is how people get shoulder and nerve pain.
- Click the pin through a hole you can see. Shake it. If it drops, it is not in.
- Spare rubber tip in the bag. Worn tips on Nairobi pavements are how people fall.
How to use walking sticks and crutches
- Elbow crutches need more upper-body strength than underarm, but they are the longer-term choice because they do not load the armpit.
- Underarm crutches: short-term fractures. Do not hang the body from the pads.
- One crutch only if a clinician has already taught a one-sided gait. Default is a pair.
- Tripod and seat sticks are for people who still take most of their own weight. They are not crutches.
- Wet tiles: rubber tips help. Smooth supermarket floors still slip. Short steps.
- Do not use a cracked bow, a missing pin or a bald ferrule. We replace those here.

Rubber tips are included with every pair. Wipe aluminium with a damp cloth. Do not leave tips in the sun until they go hard. Store upright, indoors, dry. Do not hang axillary crutches by the pads on a nail for months. The bow bends.
