What a patient transfer chair does
It is not a wheelchair. The left and right seat frames open 180 degrees so one caregiver can close the seat around a person who can sit upright, then roll them to a bed, toilet or shower. Intended for disabled people, patients, and the elderly and infirm, for transfer or commode. If the person still walks a little, start with walking sticks and crutches. If they sit all day they still need a wheelchair. A commode wheelchair is a rolling toilet-seat chair, not a lift.

Patient transfer chair precautions
Read these before the first transfer.
- Check every component is present and tight before use.
- Set a suitable height before the user sits.
- Do not stand on the foot pedal when sitting or leaving. Fold the pedal up first or the chair tips.
- Safety lock must be locked in use.
- Lock the wheels when the user sits or leaves.
- Keep the trunk upright. A large lean to the front, side or back can tip the chair.
- Do not bend below the knees to pick things off the floor.
- Lock the front wheels before changing height. Hydraulic: operator uses the pump footrest. Electric: use the remote.
- Do not rush stairs on inertia. Do not carry the user on the chair up or down stairs.
- Smooth indoor ground only. Avoid potholes.
- Downhill steeper than 5 degrees: turn the chair and go backwards. Facing forward can throw the user out.
- Lock all wheels on a slope when stopped.
- Caster brakes are parking brakes. They are not for slowing the chair while it is moving.
- Electric extra: do not let children use the remote. Do not use the electric chair if the person is paralysed or vegetative. Do not run the motor or controller into water. Charge away from fire and damp. One full charge is rated about 50 lifts.
Where you can move a transfer chair
Indoor use. Driving speed ≤ 3 km/h. Parking brakes only. We deliver and train in Nairobi flats, hospital wards and home corridors. This is not a street wheelchair.
How we assemble a transfer chair in Nairobi
Hydraulic assembly (done before delivery):
- Bolt the hydraulic pump to the chassis with 4 x M8x55 semi-round hex screws. No. 5 hex wrench.
- Fit the T-bar and left/right vertical tubes with M6x30 screws and φ6 washers. No. 4 hex wrench. Pin the pump with the φ25 bolt at the chosen hole.
- Insert the pump footrest and lock it. Confirm it is not loose.
- Clamp the rear-wheel tube under the base with 4 x M10 screws, flat washers and locknuts.
- Hang left and right seat frames on the vertical-tube brackets with M8 screws. They must rotate freely and not rattle.
- Fit the commode wire rack, then slide the pail in from the back.
Electric: lock wheels, fit 4 casters, stand the lifting column, bolt the motor and battery, set armrest length, fit steel-tube or PU backrest, power on with the right-hand button, test up/down on the remote.
How to transfer from a bed or sofa
- User sits upright. Raise the seat frames until the bottom is slightly higher than the bed or sofa.
- Open both seat frames. Centre the chair on the user's centre of gravity. Lower until the frames just touch the sitting surface.
- Lock the front-wheel brakes. Lift the feet onto the foot pedal.
- User tilts a little left, then right, while the operator swings each half of the seat under them.
- Close both frames. The safety lock should click. Operator confirms it is locked.
- User sits back and holds the front rail with both hands.
- Raise the frames 2-3 cm off the furniture. Release the front brake. Roll clear, slowly.
- Push from behind to the bed edge.
- At the bed, lock the front wheels before any height change. Frames must sit slightly above the mattress.
- Push fully onto the bed. Lock. Lower until the frames just touch the mattress.
- Release the rear safety lock. Open left and right frames so the user sits on the bed.
- Release the front brake, lift the feet, pull the chair away.
Hydraulic pump: use the foot control with the limit block. Block towards the inside, keep pumping to rise. Block towards the outside, press the pedal to the bottom to descend. Column height is also set by the clip on the pump.
If the user cannot sit upright or tilt side to side, this chair is the wrong product. Use a wheelchair or a hoist instead.

- Do not scratch the coat with hard objects.
- Neutral synthetic detergent, damp cloth, then dry cloth.
- No strong acid or alkali.

- Electric: do not open the motor or controller. Charge every two days if the chair is in daily use.
