What this standard wheelchair is
This is the everyday chrome folding wheelchair we keep on the Ronald Ngala floor. Chromed steel cross-brace frame, black padded vinyl seat and back, fixed padded armrests with side panels, flip-up footplates and a removable calf strap. The 24 inch rear wheels have hand rims so the user can self-propel. Front casters and rear tyres are solid, so they do not puncture on Nairobi tarmac. Push-to-lock parking brakes sit on both sides. The frame folds for a car boot. Rated to 100 kg.
It is the chair families buy for stroke recovery, post-surgery months, clinic visits and daily indoor use with a caregiver. If the user cannot self-propel and has no caregiver, look at an electric chair. If hip width is over about 40 cm, look at the extra wide model.

How to use this standard wheelchair
- Lock both parking brakes before the user sits or stands.
- Flip the footplates up for a standing transfer, then down once seated, and set the calf strap.
- To fold: lift the seat canvas in the middle so the cross brace closes. Do not lift by the armrests.
- Self-propel on the hand rims, not the tyre. A caregiver pushes from the rear handles.

Standard wheelchair maintenance
- Wipe vinyl with a damp cloth. Do not soak the frame welds.
- Check brake bite monthly. If a brake feels loose, WhatsApp a photo before you buy a replacement chair.
- Solid tyres do not need air. Replace when the rubber flats or cracks.
- Store folded in a dry room.
