Commode Wheelchairs and Commode Chairs: What Is the Difference?
By Wheelchairs Kenya · Updated June 2026 · Nairobi, Kenya
Two products, one confusion
Families shopping for a sick or elderly relative often ask for “a commode” and receive the wrong product. A commode chair is a seat with a hole and a removable pan. It stands beside the bed and does not move with the user. A commode wheelchair is a full wheelchair with the same toileting cut-out and pan built in: the user can be wheeled to the bathroom, positioned over the toilet, or use the pan anywhere. One product solves toileting; the other solves toileting and mobility.
Choose a commode wheelchair when…
- The user cannot walk to the toilet, even with help
- The bathroom door is too narrow for a standard wheelchair, but the user must still be moved there
- One budget must cover both a wheelchair and toileting (common after stroke or surgery)
- A caregiver handles transfers; fewer transfers per day means fewer falls
Choose a static commode chair when…
- The user is bed-bound and only needs bedside toileting
- The user already has a wheelchair they like
- Budget is the deciding factor; static chairs cost less
What to check before buying in Kenya
- Pan access: can the caregiver remove and clean the pan without lifting the user?
- Toilet clearance: if you plan to roll over the toilet, measure the toilet height and the chair’s under-seat clearance
- Cleanability: steel or chrome frames with wipeable upholstery. Hygiene is a daily job, so this matters more than looks
- Brakes: must lock firmly; most commode transfers happen with the user’s full weight on the chair edge
- Cushion comfort: commode cut-outs reduce the seating surface; users seated long hours need padding, see pressure relief
