Cerebral Palsy Wheelchairs: Support, Posture and Comfort
By Wheelchairs Kenya · Updated June 2026 · Nairobi, Kenya
Why a standard wheelchair is not enough
Cerebral palsy affects muscle tone and control. Many users cannot hold their trunk upright, control their head position, or keep their pelvis stable on a flat sling seat. In a standard wheelchair, such a user slides, leans and folds sideways, which is unsafe, uncomfortable and over time worsens posture, breathing and digestion. A CP wheelchair is built around postural support: it positions the pelvis first, then supports the trunk and head so the user can sit functionally, to eat, learn, interact and travel.
What a proper CP wheelchair includes
- Pelvic positioning belt or harness: keeps the pelvis level and back in the seat, the foundation of all good seating
- Trunk side supports (laterals): stop sideways leaning and collapse
- Contoured or padded backrest: supports the spine’s shape rather than a flat sling
- Head support: for users with limited head control, especially during transport
- Adjustable seat-to-back angle / tilt: lets a caregiver shift the user’s position through the day
- Footplates with straps: keep feet positioned and protect them while moving
- Growing room: for children, adjustable width and depth extend the chair’s useful life by years
Fitting a child vs an adult
Children with CP grow, and tone changes. Buy a chair with genuine adjustment range and have it fitted by someone who can set the harnesses correctly. A harness in the wrong position restricts breathing instead of helping posture. Wheelchairs Kenya includes free professional fitting at your home, school or therapy centre, and we train caregivers on safe positioning and transfers. Re-check the fit every 6 months for a growing child.
Questions to ask any supplier
- Can the seat width and depth be adjusted as the child grows?
- Are the trunk supports adjustable in height and width?
- Does the backrest angle adjust, and can a caregiver operate it easily?
- Is the chair foldable for matatu or car transport?
- What does the warranty cover, and are replacement harnesses and pads available locally?
If the seller cannot answer these, they are selling a chair, not a seating solution. Talk to us on WhatsApp and we will help you assess the user’s needs before you spend anything.
